SPRINGFIELD — Jack Eugene Hewes of Springfield died Feb. 6 of age-related causes. He was 89. A memorial service was held.

He was born July 17, 1919, in Ogden, Utah to Roy and Jessie Robison Hewes. He married Opal Canaday on April 19, 2003, in Eugene.

Hewes graduated from Bone High School in Bone, Idaho in 1937 and received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1956. He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946. He was a rocket science engineer, working in rocket research for the Air Force for 19 years and for the U.S. government.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jack Jr. of Palouse, Wash., and Wendell of Duluth, Minn.; four stepsons; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
