SPRINGFIELD — Joyce E. Claflin of Springfield died March 6 of cancer at age 62. A private family celebration of life is planned.

She was born May 29, 1946, in Gowen, Okla., to William and Celia Evicks Reynolds. She married Patt Claflin on Aug. 26, 1967, in Renton, Wash. He died Nov. 11, 2007.

She worked as a CNA in nursing homes.

Survivors include a son, David of Cottage Grove; a daughter, Cindy Claflin of Eugene; two brothers, Johnny Reynolds and Ron “Joe” Reynolds; and three sisters, Linnie Herndon, Nellie Roberts and Bonnie Taber.

Gail Arning

SPRINGFIELD — Gail Louis Arning of Springfield died March 8 of age-related causes at age 88. No service is planned.

He was born Nov. 3, 1920, in Quincy, Ill., to Frank and Lela Gross Mintle. He married LaVerne Westerfield in 1946. She died in 1980. He married Donna Butts on Jan. 1, 1981, in Springfield.

Arning graduated from Quincy High School. He served in the merchant marine service in the Pacific and Middle East during World War II. He worked at Sears in Portland for 25 years as division manager in the jewelry, men’s and women’s fashions and drapery departments.

He is survived by his wife.

Delores Ericson

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Eugene Evangelical Church for Delores Ethel “Dee” Ericson of Eugene, who died March 7 of bone and lung cancer. She was 75. A reception at the church will follow the service.

She was born May 26, 1933, in Oak Harbor, Wash., to Lloyd and Doris Eads Holman. She married Arnold Dean Ericson on Aug. 28, 1955, in Milton-Freewater.

She attended school in Milton-Freewater and attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene. Ericson owned and operated Under the Rainbow day care for more than 10 years.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Dennis, Bill and Jon, all of Eugene; a brother, Dick Holman of Renton, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Helen Littlejohn

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Eugene Faith Center for Helen Littlejohn of Eugene, who died Feb. 6 of age-related causes. She was 88.

She was born April. 13, 1920, in Iowa Park, Texas, to Lum and Augusta Mahler Ellis. She married Delbert Littlejohn on Sept. 7, 1947, in Riverside, Calif.

She worked as a phone operator.

Survivors include two sons, Gaylan and Lon, both of Eugene. Her husband died previously.

Richard Pence

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Country Inn Event Center in Eugene for Richard Dwight “Dick” Pence of Springfield.

He died Feb. 1 of age-related causes at age 83.

He was born Nov. 10, 1925, in Harris­burg to William and Dollie Bierly Pierce.

He married Dorothy DeGooyer in August 1952. They later divorced.

He married Betty Rackley in June 1995. She later died.

Pence graduated from Harrisburg High School.

He owned and operated gravel and log trucks, and was a co-owner of General Trailer Sales in Springfield.

Survivors include his partner of two years, Joy Perrin; five daughters, Tori Rodrigues of Aiea, Hawaii, Wendy Hernandez and Joni Pence-Coleman, both of Eugene, Cherie Maesaka of Hillsboro and Cindy Pence-Marin of San Diego; a son, Bruce of Eugene; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Barbara Nicholls

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Robinson Theatre in Eugene for Barbara L. Nicholls of Eugene.

She died Feb. 4 of pancreatic cancer at age 82.

She was born March 30, 1926, in Chicago to Deane and Vi Menieur Lennon.

She married Roger Nicholls on June 12, 1955, in Berkeley, Calif.

He died Aug. 31, 2007.

She received a degree in English literature from the University of California at Berkeley, and she later received a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago.

She worked as an academic counselor for athletes at the University of Oregon, as a human rights volunteer and as a board member for Sponsors, which provides re-entry services for ex-offenders.

Survivors include a son, Geoff of Palo Alto, Calif.; a daughter, Kate Nicholls of Westfield, N.J.; and five grandsons.

Sharon Rodakowski

Sharon Y. Rodakowski of Eugene died Feb. 4 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 68. A private blessing was held.

She was born Nov. 13, 1940, in Eugene to Clyde and Thelma Owings.

She worked on her family’s farm in Springfield and later as a bouncer at several local taverns.

Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Rodakowski of Eugene and Marlene Hyman of Spokane; two sisters, Sharlene Amos and Sherell Cantrel, both of Florence; and two grandchildren.

Vicki Meriwether

SPRINGFIELD — Vicki Helen Meriwether of Springfield died Feb. 5 of age-related causes. She was 85. No service is planned.

She was born March 22, 1923, in Johnstown, Pa., to Victor and Helen Von Alt Buettner.

She attended Ohio State University from 1942 to 1945. She worked as an accountant for Mervyn’s department stores and as a dispatcher for the Cleveland police department.

Survivors include a daughter, Lee La Tour of Eugene; two sons, Marvin Meriwether and Jeffery Meriwether, both of Cleveland, Ohio; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Two sons died previously: Terry McCue in 1972 and Patrick McCue in 2002.

SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 14, in the meeting room of the Springfield Public Library for Janet Teresa Shorey of Springfield. She died Feb. 8 of congestive heart failure at age 49.

She was born Jan. 3, 1960, in Oakridge to Norman and Elizabeth Finney Shorey.

She graduated from Roseburg High School in 1980.

Survivors include two sons, Derick Richardson of Oregon City and Lester Richardson of Nashville, Tenn.; two brothers, Norman Shorey of Oregon City and Joe Shorey of Salem, Mo.; two sisters, Judy Conn of Oregon City and Jodi Powell of Springfield; and five grandchildren.

Asjia Salladay

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at West Lawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Eugene for Asjia Bridgette Salladay of Eugene, who died Feb. 7 at age 34.

She was born Dec. 3, 1974, in Roseburg to Lawrence Gibbons Jr. and Roxanne Wright Gibbons. She married Guy Germann on March 14, 2003, in Eugene.

Survivors include her husband; her mother, Roxanne Rettinger; her father; grandparents, Roger Wright, Ginger Wright and Charleen Gibbons; a great-grandmother, Opal Huffman; two sons, Blake Danner and Austen Gibbons, both of Eugene; a daughter, Brooke Danner of Eugene; a stepson, Deion Germann of Eugene; three brothers, Roger Rettinger and Hank Rettinger, both of Battle Ground, Wash., and Lawrence Gibbons III of Roseburg; and a sister, Kandice McLean of Harrisburg.
