Arthur Chard Millman

May 21, 2009

Arthur Chard Millman passed away in Eugene on April 10th after a brief illness.  He was born in Chicago in 1916, the son of an English father and mother (Amanda Carlson Millman) of Swedish descent.  In 1939 he married Helen Virginia Stark and they had two daughters, Tecla and Sara.  After his divorce in 1965, Arthur married Mary Witter Booth in 1975.

A mechanical designer for twenty years at the Livermore Laboratory of the University of California at Berkeley, he took early retirement to pursue his first love-playing cello.  In earlier years Arthur played flute with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, which toured the country during the depression years.  For many years he worked as a draftsman at Gaertner Scientific Company, Chicago, before moving to California.

An only and late child, Arthur felt most at home with books, music, and watching the trees he planted grow.  In retirement, he bicycled instead of driving a car whenever possible, and was scrupulous about recycling and returning to the soil kitchen scraps and clippings form the garden.

Arthur lived in the NOW and respected the personhood of each individual with whom he came into contact.  In the various communities where he lived in retirement he played cello in community orchestras and small chamber groups, and continued his musical studies.  He was always interested in encouraging talented young people in the playing of cello and frequently loaned sheet music to them. Within the Religious Society of Friends, he has served as recoring clerk and assistant clerk when a member of Redwood Forest (CA) and Pima Meeting (AZ).

His wife, Mary, predeceased him in 2005.  He is survived by daughters Sara Ruth Millman, of Hilo, Hawaii, and Tecla McCann of Cornish, New Hampshire, as well as granddaughter Amy Ledwell (Quincy, MA), grandson Jon Mires (El Cerrito, CA) and great-grandsons Cole and Lane Mires.  His two stepdaughters, Heather Booth of Blythe, CA, and Ann B. Fine of Walnut Creek, CA also survive him.

The immediate family will gather for private remembrances at a later time.  Memorial contributions in memory of Arthur may be made to environmental causes of the donor’s choice.
