Orben McAdoo

Orben Orville McAdoo was born June 12, 1934, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Everett and Ruby Cordell McAdoo.  He married Carolyn Richards in 1959.

Mr. McAdoo graduated from Huntington Park High School in California in 1952.  He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and worked in the printing business for 56 years, retiring from the University of Oregon in 2000.

He passed away May 14, 2009 at his home in Creswell of cancer.  He was 74.   

He is survived by his former wife, Carolyn; children Michael McAdoo of Tenino, Washington and Jennifer Cartright of Creswell; siblings Everett of Fallbrook, California, and Evelyn Goviania and Lottie Rocha, both of Norwalk, California; five treasured grand­children and one precious great-grandchild.  One son, Charles, died previously.

Mr. McAdoo’s family is planning a private celebration of life later.  Conributions in his memory may be made to Cascade Hospice.

John Matthews

John L. Matthews was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Soper, Oklahoma, to Emmett and Dessie Fails Matthews.  He graduated from Springfield High School in Springfield, Oregon in 1955 and married Sally Fletcher there on Dec. 14, 1956.

John was a remarkable man.  A man of principal and honor.  A strong man.  John Matthews obituaries He worked for Weyerhauser for 29 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1994. In the early years he didn’t just work full-time at Weyerhauser; he also worked eight hours a day as a roofer.  He did whatever it took to provide for his family.

 John died May 14 of bile duct cancer.  He was 71. 

He is survived by his loving wife, Sally; his daughter, Jane Matthews of Springfield; sons John Jr. of Springfield, Russell of Eugene, David of Sweet Home and Paul of Eugene; by a brother, Bill of Dexter; and by twelve  much-loved grandkids.

The celebration of a life well-lived will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at Buell Funeral Chapel in Springfield.  John’s family would like to extend a very special thank you to all who have shared their love and support in this most difficult time.  God bless you.

Florence Schrumm

SPRINGFIELD — Florence Schrumm of Springfield died May 14 of congestive heart failure. She was 87. No service is planned.

She was born April 4, 1922, in Portland, to Ole and Anna Gufstason Nalum.

She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1938. She worked as a bookkeeper until her retirement at 82.

Survivors include three sons, Michael, Fred and Steven; a sister, Betty Ritchey; a brother, Robert Nalum; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Max Evans

SPRINGFIELD — Max Wendell Evans of Springfield died May 11 of complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 77. A memorial service will be later.

He was born Oct. 10, 1931, in Mesa, Idaho, to Oliver and Mina Hallett Evans. He married Delpha Burt on Oct. 31, 1948, in Weiser, Idaho.

He graduated from high school in Council, Idaho, and from Nampa Business School in Idaho. He worked in apple orchards in Idaho, then worked for Union Pacific Railroad from 1951 to 1991.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Mike and Dave, both of Springfield, Gary of Vancouver, Wash., and Tony of Canby; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, Kyla Nagel, died previously.

Lynda Cooper

SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. May 28 at Restoration Fellowship for Lynda Lee Cooper of Springfield, who died May 9, 2009.  She was 62.

She was born July 4, 1946, in Klamath Falls to Lyle and Virginia Johnson Tharp. She married Garry Cooper in 1975.

She graduated from Springfield High School.

She is survived by  her husband; a son and daughter; two siblings, Greg Tharp and Leland Tharp; and three grandchildren.

Nora Sweeney

Nora E. Sweeney was born January 27, 1936 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Ed and Ethel (Sanford) Murray.

A good Catholic gal, she graduated from Saint Francis High School and married John T. Sweeney on September 10, 1955 at St. Alice Catholic Church in Springfield, Oregon.  She worked as a nurses’ aide in a nursing home for many years,  upholstered furniture and pruned roses for Chet Cascades Rose Gardens–which is saying something, because you had to be good to work there!

Nora Sweeney obituaries Nora passed away May 18, 2009 at her home in Springfield, the victim of cancer.  She leaves behind her loving hubby of 53 years, John; children John E. Sweeney, Kathy Harris, Rose Riley, Dwayne Sweeney and Kevin Sweeney, all of Springfield; siblings Jim Murray of Sisters, OR, John Murray of Eugene, OR, Rosalee Murray of Springfield, Ed Murray of Seattle, WA, Donna Height of Eugene, Fran Loesch of Eugene, Ben Murray of Eugene, Mike Murray of Eugene, Margaret Ausmus of Springfield, Linda Patrick of Bend, OR, Sharon Hervey of Bend and Debbie Sherman of Springfield; and by 14 much-loved grandkids and 7 treasured great grandkids.  She is joining a grandson, Tory, and a great grandson, Christopher.

Nora’s family is planning a memorial service on Saturday, May 23rd at 10am at St. Alice Catholic Church in Springfield, where she and John were married.  Andreason’s Cremation & Burial Service is helping the family.

Gerald Thomsen

Gerald James Thomsen was born August 12, 1928, just a few blocks from his last home in Junction City.  Born in his parent’s (Oscar and Hanna (Nielsen) Thomsen) front room he grew up, graduated from high school (1947) and lived most of his life there in Junction City, Oregon. 

Gerald married Ella Fay Simpson on September 16, 1949 in Reno and eventually went to work for Agripac, a fruit and vegetable cannery.  He started out in the boiler room, but showed promise, and it wasn’t long before the company offered to send him to school to learn to become an electrician.

He was a simple guy.  He enjoyed the outdoors, woodworking and tinkering.  He loved gardening and his dog Molly and wore bib overalls most of the time.

His partner in life died April 1, 2000.  It was a hard time for Gerald.  He joined her again on  Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Riverbend Hospital in nearby Springfield.  He was 80, and his heart just gave out on him.  He is survived by his daughters, Judy Thomsen of Junction City, Sandy Thelen (and her hubby Bob) and Teresa Peterson (and hubby Scott), all of Seattle; his brother Oscar “Bud” Thomsen of Eugene; and by much-loved grandkids Cati, Billy, Victoria, Alexander and Olivia.

Gerald’s family is planning a memorial service later in the summer.  Those wishing to contribute in his memory may make contributions to the Junction City Fire Department.

Shirley Anderson Lang

Shirley Jean Lang was born May 3, 1935 in Fresno, California.  The daughter of  Ralph and Mable (Heilman) Anderson, she married Walter Einstein in December of 1955.

Shirley attended Fresno State and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Interior Design.  She worked in that trade in Boston, Naples Florida and, in retirement, for select clients.  She enjoyed gardening and was a talented painter. 

She passed away May 15, 2009 at her home in Eugene of age-related causes.  Shirley was 74.  She is survived by her son, Kurt Einstein of Boston; daughters Beverly Einstein of Eugene and Brenda Einstein of Conway, NH; sisters Elaine Jayne of Kalamazoo, MI and Barbara Kramer of Albany, OR; and by seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Shirley’s last wishes to all was to support KWAX (classical music station in Eugene), to enjoy the flowers and to keep laughing.  A memorial celebration for family and friends is planned for May 28th from 4-6pm at her home in Eugene.

Harold Spratt

VENETA — Harold Leonard Spratt of Veneta died May 11 of age-related causes. He was 91. No service is planned.

He was born Dec. 19, 1917, in Stella, Wash., to Wallace and Clara Richard Spratt.

He married Louise Gregory.

Spratt served in the Army in the late 1930s. He worked in the lumber industry for most of his life.

Survivors include a sister, Helene Paulmier of Portland; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. His wife, a son, James, a daughter, Rosita Christopher and a grandson, Everett Phelps, died previously.

Vicki Pace

Vicki Lynn Pace of Eugene died May 10 of cancer. She was 59. No service is planned.

She was born Jan. 19, 1950, in Seattle to Ralph and Carol Cowen Hayes. She married Gary Pace on Jan. 3, 2000, in Everett, Wash. He died June 5, 2004.

She graduated from Kodiak High School in Kodiak, Alaska, in 1967. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Shaun Pace of Springfield and Van Best of North Carolina; a daughter, Bonnie Powers of North Carolina; two half-­brothers, John Landers of Everett, Wash., and James Landers of Tennessee; two half-sisters, Joann Ramirez of Eugene and Joy Simpson of Washington; and two grandchildren.
