MARCOLA — A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 10 at the First Congregational Church in Eugene for Anne Sherman of Marcola, who died June 4 of age-related causes. She was 77.
She was born May 28, 1932, in Detroit, to Prescott and Josephine Marian Schlotterbeck. She married Peter Sherman in June 1965 in Eugene; he died in 1991.
Sherman earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Oregon and was a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Guy Lee Elementary School.
Survivors include a son, Gene Frazell of Marcola; a daughter, Lori Ball of Springfield; a stepson, Paul Sherman of Sacramento, Calif.; and a stepdaughter, Martha Sherman of Reno, Nev.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A son, Daniel Frazell, died in 1977.

Charles Hodges

SPRINGFIELD — Charles V. “Chuck” Hodges of Springfield died June 22 of respiratory failure and pneumonia. He was 71. A family memorial service will be later.
He was born Aug. 26, 1937, in Eugene to Jack and Dorothy Bray Hodges. He married Donna Bingham on Dec. 14, 1955, in Eugene.
He graduated from Eugene High School in 1955. He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959 and as a reservist for four more years as a hospital corpsman. He worked for Borden Chemicals, then for Bohemia until the mill closed, and then as a road supervisor for Lane Transit District.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Stan of Bullhead City, Ariz., Rick of Reno, Nev., and Charles Jr. and William, both of Springfield; a sister, Dolores McCain of Cottage Grove; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

B. Edward Bergersen

B. Edward “Ed” Bergersen of Eugene died June 17 of age-related causes at age 88. No service is planned.
He was born July 28, 1920, in Duluth, Minn., to Mat and Henny Welford Bergersen. He married Lois Gronholz on Dec. 21, 1947, in Appleton, Minn. She died on May 5, 2005.
He served as an Army corpsman in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He earned a bachelor’s of science in bacteriology at the University of Minnesota in 1947. He worked as a process engineer in food production, including more than 20 years at Cherry Burrell Corp.
Survivors include a three sons, Steve of Houston, Texas, Paul of Eugene and Jeff of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a brother, Donald, of Nisswa, Minn.; and six grandchildren.

SPRINGFIELD — Joseph Elias Basha of Springfield died June 21 of age-related causes at age 91. At his request, there will be no service. Taps will be played at his burial at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
He was born March, 24, 1918, in Lawrence, Mass., to Elias and Victoria Saaba Basha. He married Dorothy Draper on June 7, 1997, in Springfield.
He served as a Marine corporal in World War II and was on Iwo Jima when the flag was raised. He worked many jobs, including as a warehouseman, as a mail truck driver, shingling houses, and as a horse owner and trainer.
Survivors include his wife; and four daughters, B.J. LaBonte of Amherst, N.H., Linda Brookshire of Mount Vernon, N.H., Laura Neuhausel of Oakland, Calif., and Pat Basha of Lexington, Mass.

SPRINGFIELD — Robert Francis Alban of Springfield died June 24 of age-related causes at age 88. A private burial will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
He was born Oct. 19, 1920, in Winifred, Kan., to Charles and Lillian Trial Alban.
He married Alice Callahan on April 9, 1947, in Atchison, Kan.
He served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a heavy-equipment mechanic for Howard Cooper Corp. for 27 years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael of Abilene, Texas, and John of Eugene; two daughters, Carolyn Coble of Halfway and Mary Artz of Corvallis; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

SPRINGFIELD — A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 29, at the VFW Hall in Springfield for Donald William Yantz of Springfield, who died June 23 of small-cell lung cancer at age 72.
He was born Oct. 23, 1936, in Lebanon, Pa., to Walter and Evelyn Zimmerman Yantz. He married Wilma Godsey in Lebanon, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1948.
He graduated from Lebanon High School in Pennsylvania in 1954. He served as an airman first class in the U.S. Air Force between 1954 and 1958. He worked as an automotive technician in Eugene and Springfield for more than 47 years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Michelle Hendee of Sweet Home and Lynette Wittmayer of Prineville; a son, Danny of Las Cruces, N.M.; a brother, Dale of Lebanon; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A grandson, Brian Miller, died in 1995.

JUNCTION CITY — Carolyn S. “Candy” Williams of Junction City died June 19 of heart disease. She was 49. No service is planned.
She was born June 15, 1960, in Ar-cada, Calif., to William Gam- ble and Carolyn Sullivan.
She graduated from North Eugene High School in 1978. She worked as a bartender at The Raven in Junction City for more than a year.
Survivors include four children, Richard Knotts and Christopher Knotts, both of Eugene, Shannon O’Connor of San Diego and Jamie Williams of Junction City; her mother, Carolyn Courtney of Eugene; a grandmother, Lillian Gamble of Beaumont, Calif.; two brothers, William Gamble of Louisiana and Brian Gamble of Eugene; a sister, Cynthia Gamble Clark of Redmond; and two grandchildren.

SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 26, at Wayside Open Bible Chapel in Springfield for Joyce Dunlap of Springfield, who died June 22 of cancer at age 65. Visitation will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Buell Funeral Chapel and a celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Friday at Island Park in Springfield.
She was born July 21, 1943, to Anne Layman. She married Ralph Dunlap Jr. in Florence in December 1961. He died Oct. 18, 1993.
She worked as a customer service representative for K-Mart for 10 years, and also worked for Arc of Lane County for many years. She owned and operated a jewelry shop in downtown Springfield.
Survivors include four sons, Ralph III of Idaho and Rod, Ryan and Robbie, all of Springfield; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was born Oct. 31, 1950, in Bakersfield,Calif., to Hank and Dorothy Nitzel. She married Tom- my Blackwell on Oct. 31, 1979, in Charleston, S.C.
She graduated from Junction City High School in 1968 and worked as a pharmacy technician.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Kim Hallmark of Eugene; a son, Mike of Eugene; two sisters, Elouise Durr of Nevada and Connie Banford of Hillsboro; a brother, Tracy Nitzel of Cheshire; and two grandchildren.

SPRINGFIELD — Bettie E. Armstrong of Springfield died June 23 of cancer. She was 77. A private family gathering is planned.
She was born June 28, 1931, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Richard and Elizabeth Williamson Free. She married Norman Armstrong in 1952 in Reno, Nev. He died in 1976.
She worked in the restaurant industry in several capacities and later worked in home health care as a care provider.
Survivors include a son, Mike of Springfield; a daughter, Angela Armstrong of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Barbara Collett of Burnt Woods; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
