Kim Kilmer (Kundara das)

August 19, 2009

Kim Kilmer was born January 15, 1954 in Dallas, Oregon to Kenneth Kilmer Sr. and Evelyn Burbank Kilmer.

He was a sales representative, travelling around the East Coast selling household goods at trade shows.  But that really doesn’t tell who Kim was.

Kim’s death was not ordinary; he was a holy man.  He passed on in peace and love and the mercy of the Supreme Lord.

His religious beliefs are called Sanatan Dharma.  He was dressed in pure cloth (kurta: shirt, dhoti: like a sarong and chadar: neck scarf).  He had some very sacred beads aound his neck that could not be removed, a leaf from the tulsi plant (holy basil) on his tongue, a bag containing other holy beads was placed at his side, his family anointed his forehead with sacred clay and he was immediately cremated.  All these things are necessary to properly honor their customs of last rites.  His ashes will be placed in the Ganges River, in India, in a private ceremony.

Kim passed away at his home in Eugene on August 18, 2009 from brain cancer.  He was 55.  He is survived by daughters Nadia  of Mexico and Varshana of California and siblings Ken of Eugene, Kathy of Las Vegas and Robert of Augusta, Georgia.

Nannette O’Toole

August 18, 2009

Nannette Eileen O’Toole of Florence died August 16 of a complication from two brain tumors.  She was full of life at the age of 60.  She is now beyond the fullness of this life in her heavenly home with her Friend and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Memorial Services have yet to be announced.

She was born May 12, 1949 in Culver City, California to Lawrence and Eileen Williams.  She married Wayne O’Toole on June 9, 1973 in Lancaster, California.  Their union was blessed with three wonderful children.  She worked for Sacred Heart Medical Center for 15 years in the Stores and Pharmacy Departments.  She was an excellent homemaker and quilter.  She loved animals with a passion.  More importantly, Nannette valued her loved ones greatly.  She was well known among family and friends for remembering and commemorating both their grand and small life events.  She loved to laugh.

Survivors include the following with thier personal remembrances of her:  her mother, Eileen Williams of Florence–”she was…so generous”; her husband, Wayne O’Toole of Florence–”Jesus is my King but she was…my queen”; her daughter, Shannon O’Toole-Paulus of Fall Creek–”she could make one feel special, she was…so unique”; her eldest son, Patrick O’Toole of Eugene–”she gave and loved so deeply, she was…inspiration”; her youngest son, Lance O’Toole of Eugene–”she was…my best friend”.

It’s so hard for her family to say “she was,” and not, “she is”.  But they now say, “she is…dancing with Jesus, laughing and smiling so bright.”

Gerda Lewis

August 17, 2009

Germany in the 1930′s was a hard place to grow up.  Gerda’s grandfather was put in a concentration camp during the war, and when the camp was liberated by the Americans her grandfather was befriended by a young American Soldier.  Neither spoke or wrote the other’s language, but they communicated nonetheless and became close.

In the 1950′s Gerda got a job in the German-American Consulate in Frankfurt and began translating letters the two men were sending back and forth.  Eventually the American invited the elder German to visit America, and in 1960 the family immigrated here.  The young American soldier, William C. Lewis, and Gerda were married September 1, 1960 in Roseburg.  Gerda worked for Sunrise Emporium in Roseburg for 28 years, well into her 70′s, teaching the handicapped to become more independent.
