Christi Sahlin

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Community of Christ, 1485 Gilham Road, for Christi Elaine Sahlin of Springfield, who died Sept. 18 of cancer. She was 64.

She was born July 8, 1945, in Vancouver, Wash., to Joy and Opal Wahl Varner, and adopted by Harold and Leona Carpenter. She married James Sahlin in 1979 in Tarkio, Mo.

She worked in accounts payable for the Bi-Mart Corp. in Eugene.

Survivors include three daughters, Tamera Karlstrom of Colorado, Audra Karlstrom of Minnesota and Tina Trenary of Springfield; numerous siblings including two sisters, Ella Gandy of Salem and Rose Varner of Vancouver; and six grandchildren. Her husband and a daughter, Carissa Sahlin, died previously.

John Van Herwaarden

John “Johanny” Van Herwaarden of Eugene died Sept. 9 of lung cancer. He was 62. A private family service was held.

He was born Aug. 2, 1947, in the Netherlands to Fritz and Betty Stender Van Herwaarden. He married Patricia Reed on March 22, 1967, in Eugene. His former wife died Aug. 9, 2008.

He was a North Eugene High School graduate and worked as a welder, fabricator and musician.

Survivors include two sons, Johannes and Peter, both of Eugene; a brother, Pete of Eugene; and three grandchildren.

Howard Richard

Howard L. “Lee” Richard of Springfield died Sept. 7 of age-related causes. He was 91. A private service was held, and inurnment will be at a later date.

He was born April 7, 1918, in Missouri to Howard and Lottie Wilson Richard. He married his wife, Ilse, on July 15, 1950, in New Jersey.

He served in the Navy during World War II and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. He worked as a defense contractor.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Cathleen Montero of Salinas, Calif., and Sharon Sommers of San Diego; and one grandchild.

Robert Gudgel

Robert Eugene “Gene” Gudgel of Junction City died Sept. 11 of pancreatic cancer at age 59. A service with military honors will be held later at Arlington National Cemetery.

He was born January 15, 1950, in Evansville, Ind., to Robert A. and Elizabeth Huering Gudgel.

He married Christine Carter Sept. 3, 1988, in Roy, Utah.

He graduated from high school in Owensville, Ind., and received a bachelor’s degree in aviation technology from Purdue University. He was a major in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Guam during the Vietnam War and served in the Gulf War, stationed in Saudi Arabia.

Survivors include his wife; his father of Owensville; a daughter, Gina Cabrera of New Mexico; a son, Vaughn Gudgel of Florida; two stepdaughters, Alicia Gyori of Washington and Angela Sigler of Georgia; two sisters, Linda Presnell and Mary Juhan, both of Owensville; and seven grandchildren.

Thomas Young

Thomas Arthur Young of Eugene died Aug. 30 of age-related causes. He was 87. No service is planned.

Young was born April 5, 1922, in Bournedale, Mass., to Jacob and Ruby Gibbs Young. He married Alice Saunders in 1956 in Richmond, Va. She died in February 2002.

He attended Springfield College in Massachusetts, worked for the Y.M.C.A. for seven years and taught physical education at Lane Community College from 1965 to 1999. He served in the 498th Bombardment Group in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Beth South of Eugene; and two sons, Thomas and Stephen, both of the East Coast.

Albert Fetgatter

A celebration of life will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Ballet Northwest Academy in Eugene for Albert Glen “Al” Fetgatter of Springfield, who died Sept. 3 of complications from diabetes. He was 45.

He was born Sept. 13, 1963, in Kankakee, Ill., to Walter and Sandra Reed Fetgatter.

He graduated from North Eugene High School and attended Lane Community College. He worked for 15 years in his family’s business, Tailoring Express.

He is survived by his father; his grandmothers, Alice Rodebaugh and Mary Fetgatter; a son, Alex Fetgatter of Springfield; and a sister, Diane Huffman of Dexter.

Mary Illardo

Mary Jean Illardo of Eugene died Sept. 10 at age 74. No service is planned.

Mrs. Illardo was born June 23, 1935, in New York to Frank and Josephine Russo Macaluso.

She is survived by a daughter, Joan Illardo Little.

A son, Albert, died previously.

Mary Aubrey

SPRINGFIELD — A celebration of life potluck will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Creswell VFW for Mary Ina Bruce Aubrey of Springfield, who died Sept. 10 of congestive heart failure. She was 81.

She was born on March 5, 1928, in Tarrent City, Ala., to Robert and Mary Butts Bruce. She married Chester Aubrey on June 15, 1946, in Lorane. He died Jan. 27, 1987.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, R. Chester of Springfield; two daughters, M. Linda Aubrey of Springfield and Ina J. Andre of Wamic; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Loretta Woods

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Springfield Memorial Gardens for Loretta I. Woods of Springfield, who died Sept. 6 at age 74.

She was born Dec. 23, 1934, in Cincinnati to Thomas and Eva Johnson Brookover.

She worked as a cocktail waitress for many years in California and was a homemaker.

Survivors include four sons, Joe Wait of Veneta, Earl Lemon Jr. of Eugene, David Lemon of Springfield and Bob Bush of Curtain; two daughters, Kathy Mathson of Sand Hollow, Idaho, and Julie Hathorn of Junction City; two sisters, Hazel Finch of Pleasant Hill and Wanda Walker of Alaska; and 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Jack Edwards

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the North Eugene Faith Center, 151 River Ave., for Jack Lee Edwards of Eugene, who died Sept. 9 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 80.

Edwards was born April 11, 1929, in Allen, Okla., to Hiram Haywood and Esther Opal Edwards. He and his wife, Betty, were married June 25, 1961, in Cotati, Calif.

He was an auto theft investigator for the California Highway Patrol, where he worked for 28 years. He spent many years in the missionary field.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Dean Edwards of Colorado Springs, Colo., Richard Adams of Burnsville, Minn., Dennis Edwards of Woodland Hills, Calif, and David Adams of Eugene; a daughter, Kandi Parry of Montrose, Colo.; a sister, Marquita Edwards Chambers of Modest, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
