Bill Hopper

Bill Hopper

Bill S. Hopper of Springfield died Jan. 21 of cancer. He was 84. No service is planned.

He was born Dec. 1, 1925, in Vinton, Iowa, to Clarence and Hazel Usher Hopper. He married Lois Coleman on April 2, 1950, in Rock Island, Ill.

Bill served in the Navy during World War II as a radar technician on the USS Auburn, and saw combat in the Pacific Theater.

He received an associate’s degree in X-ray technology at the University of Iowa and became a Chief X-Ray Technician involved in training.  He was in the x-ray business in Oregon since 1962, starting his own company in the 1970′s.

His interest in nature and conservation led him to memberships in The Eugene Natural History Society, The Nature Conservancy, The Wilderness Society and The National Parks Conservation Association.

Among his many interests were hiking, photography, birding, wood carving and gardening.  He was a great lover of books and used bookstores.  He fed his adventurous and independent spirit with travel, which he managed to combine with most of his other interests.  His favorite solo excursion was cycling and hitch-hiking in Ireland.

He donated articles to The Usher’s Ferry Museum near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, including his great-grandmother’s riding saddle.

Bill volunteered at The UO Natural History Museum, Camp Creek Elementary School, The Special Olympics and EC CARES Program at the UO.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kelly Moore of San Francisco; a son, Mike of Eugene; and one granddaughter.

Arrangements by Andreason’s Cremation & Burial Service in Springfield. Remembrances to the Nature Conservancy.
