Jean LeMay

Jean Phyllis LeMay of Springfield died May 20 of cancer. She was 72. A private family memorial service is planned for later.

She was born Aug. 20, 1937, in Duluth, Minn., to John and Zona Kearns Peterson. She married Eugene LeMay on Dec. 11, 1954, in Duluth. They divorced in 1980.

A high school graduate, she was a homemaker and later worked in the clerical field and in housekeeping.

Survivors include five sons, Patrick of Cottage Grove, Thomas of New Market, N.H., Michael of Sherwood, Timothy of Harrisburg and John of Eugene; two daughters, Nancy Nicklin of Eugene and Kathleen Cooper of Nampa, Idaho; a sister, Peggy JoAn Rands of Duluth; two brothers, John Peterson of Springfield and Michael Peterson of Eugene; 12 grand­children; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy B. Weiss

Dorothy Weiss was born September 10, 1925 in North Bend, Oregon to Charles and Edith (Schaeffer) Hulen.  She grew up and went to school there, graduating high school in 1943.  The young woman  got a job as a bank teller and worked her way up to auditor.

Dorothy married David Weiss on February 5, 1944 at Camp McCoy in Lafayette, Wisconsin.  David had enlisted in the army the year Dorothy B. Weiss obituaries before and served in the infantry in Central Europe.  Eventually life let David and Dorothy  settle in Salem before taking them to Eugene a few years ago.

Dorothy Weiss passed away May 20, 2010 in Eugene.  She will be greatly missed.

She leaves behind her loving husband; their son John Weiss and his wife Terri and their daughter Pamela Higginbotham and her husband Alan.  Her life was blessed with grandchildren Jennifer, Douglas and Andrew Weiss, Adrian Higginbotham and Emily Hunt.  She is joining not just her parents and siblings, but also grandson Andrew.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 3:00 pm at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon where David will eventually lay beside her. 

Dorothy’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Sheldon Park, and to all their friends and family who have given their love, support and prayers in this time of need.

Rosemary Free

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, at St. Alice Catholic Church in Springfield for Rosemary Free of Springfield, who died May 14 of cancer. She was 74.

She was born Sept. 24, 1935, in Columbus, Neb., to Frank and Mary Schmidt. She married Loren Free on Nov. 13, 1954, in Mount Angel.

She graduated from high school in Mount Angel. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Douglas and Mark, both of Eugene; three daughters, Laura Free and Julie Stacy, both of Eugene, and Linda Salmon of Springfield; two brothers, Larry Schmidt of Springfield and Joe Schmidt of Mount Angel; a sister, Mary Ann Raymond of Portland; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

James Armstrong

James Scott Armstrong of Eugene died May 12 of renal failure. He was 53. A private family service will be held later.

He was born Jan. 30, 1957, in Akron, Ohio, to Richard and Margaret Aderonich Armstrong.

He graduated from Kent High School in Ohio. He worked as a roofer.

Survivors include four sons, Zack and Nick, both of Boise, and Kevin and Adam, both of Eugene; a brother, Pat of Akron; three sisters, Kate Armstrong of Hollywood, Fla., and Sue Armstrong and Peggy Schneider, both of Akron; and one granddaughter.

Chuck Hitt

Chuck Hitt of Springfield died May 12 of age-related causes. He was 82. No service is planned.

He was born June 13, 1927, in Detroit, Mich., to Newell and Thelma Kellenburger Hitt. He married Claire Julian on April 9, 1949, in Fullerton, Calif.

He held a bachelor’s degree from Whittier College and his master’s degree in education from Long Beach State in California. He served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He worked for 33 years in the educational field in California and continued in the field in Oregon.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Robert of Springfield, James of Pacific Grove, Calif., and John of Plano, Texas; a daughter, Wendy Brown of Snohomish, Wash.; a sister, Linda Walker of San Diego; and five grandchildren.

Ricarte Narvasa

Ricarte I. Narvasa of Springfield died May 12 of renal failure. He was 70. Visitation was held.

He was born Feb. 27, 1940, in the Philippines to Magdelino and Benita Imbat Narvasa. He married Rosario Ursabia in November 1958 in the Philippines.

A high school graduate, he worked as a farmer in the Philippines and in the fast food industry in Oregon.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Reynaldo Narvasa of Springfield and Ricky Narvasa, Randy Narvasa, Renee Garcia and Charlie Narvasa, all of the Philippines; a daughter, Rowena Reyes of London; four sisters, Francisca Boado, Florentina Soliven, Corazon Disbo and Lolita Veduya, all of the Philippines; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Two sons, Rodelio Narvasa and Ramir Narvasa, died previously.

Donald Schenk

A celebration of life will be held sometime in August in Sandy for Donald Schenk of Eugene, who died May 7 of age-related causes. He was 86.

He was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Brown County, Minn., to Gustav and Laura Lueth Schenk. He married Leona D. Krause on May 31, 1951, in Gresham. She died on Aug. 12, 1996.

He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 and was in the military police during World War II.

He was a carbon setter and potman from 1952 to 1983 at Reynolds Aluminum in Troutdale.

Survivors include a daughter, Lauralynn Hollister of Eugene; two sons, John Schenk of Portland and Gustav Schenk of Sandy; a half-brother, Jerry Korstad of Rochester, Minn.; and nine grand­children and five great-grandchildren.

A son, Larry Schenk, died in 2005.

Lloyd Staples

Lloyd S. Staples of Eugene died May 8 of age-related causes. He was just short of his 100th birthday.

Lloyd was born Aug. 12, 1910, in Chicago to Fred and Celia Smith Staples.  He married Marta Cerny on May 15, 1938, in New York City.

During the 1930s he was an opera singer, touring all 48 states. He sang and Marta played the piano. 

During World War II, he worked as a draftsman in the Portland shipyards. He later worked as a logger, made redwood novelties and raised chickens.

Survivors include his wife of almost 72 years; a son, Doug of Kalama, Wash.; a daughter, Kirstie Bushnell of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Powell

Mary Louise Powell of Springfield, formerly of Florence, died May 8 of Alzheimer’s disease. She was 83. A private family service is planned.

She was born Jan. 16, 1927, in Benton Harbor, Mich., to Edgar and Blanche Lindsey Phares.

She married Eugene Powell on Aug. 4, 1945, in Benton Harbor. He died Feb. 13, 1998.

She graduated from Bay City Central High School in Michigan in 1945 and from Bay City Junior College. She worked as a teller and bank manager, then personnel director for J.P. Morgan and Chase Co. in New York.

Survivors include daughter, Becky Powell of Junction City; a son, Joseph of Athens, Ga.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A son, Tedd Powell, died March 17, 2005.

James Diggs

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Countryside Pizza and Grill in Eugene for James Henry Diggs of Eugene, who died May 9 of age-related causes. He was 76.

He was born Nov. 29, 1933, in Greenville, Texas, to Euell and Rosaleen Dontley Diggs.

He attended Texas A&M on a ROTC scholarship and studied geographic engineering. He graduated from Wichita State University. Between active duty and reserves, he served 17 years in the U.S. Air Force. During the early 1950s, he served as navigator on a bomber. After his military service, he worked in real estate.

Survivors include two sons, Asoka of Portland and Garby of Japan; three brothers, Charles of Illinois and Larry and Oliver, both of Texas; and a sister, Wanda Rimmer of Texas.
