SPRINGFIELD — Frederick Charles Guiol of Springfield died Jan. 16 of cancer. He was 51. No service is planned.

He was born Jan. 19, 1959, in Oregon. He lived in Lane County for more than 25 years.

Survivors include a brother, Gregg, of Dana Point, Calif.

Sumiko “Sunny” Anhorn

SPRINGFIELD — Sumiko “Sumy” Anhorn of Springfield died Jan. 14 after a stroke. She was 75. No service is planned.

She was born Oct. 8, 1935, in Los Angeles to Kameichi and Hayako Ikeda. She married Donald Anhorn in 1956 in Santa Barbara, Calif.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Derek of Springfield and Stuart of Junction City; two brothers, Robert Ikeda of Stockton, Calif., and Noby Ikeda of Novato, Calif.; a sister, Margaret Kono of Tokyo; and two grandchildren. A son, Jeffrey Anhorn, died previously.

Berand Wayn Nielsen

SPRINGFIELD — Berand Wayn Nielsen of Springfield died Jan. 12 of kidney failure. He was 68. A celebration of life is planned for later.

He was born March 14, 1942, in Payette, Idaho, to Virgil and Leona Nielsen. He married Carolyn Dubell on March 14, 1977, in Eugene.

He attended Willamette High School. He worked as a meat cutter, truck driver and millwright.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Phil of Texas, Steve of Eugene and Matt of Albany; five brothers, Walter of Minnesota, Mike and Roger, both of Washington, Bob of Elmira and Gary of Eugene; and two sisters, Patricia Miller and Virginia Crandell, both of Eugene. A son, Christopher Nielsen, died previously.

Charles Horine

SPRINGFIELD — Charles Horine of Springfield died Dec. 30 of lung cancer. He was 92. A memorial celebration of life is planned for the spring.

He was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Kansas to William and Irene Horine. He married Treva Smith on Sept. 2, 1949, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She died April 11, 2010.

He graduated high school in Shell City, Mo., in 1936. He served as a cryptographer in the Army Air Corps in Italy during World War II. He worked as a industrial electrician in Springfield until his retirement.

Survivors include a son, David of Springfield; a daughter, Karen Rose of Springfield; two sisters, Helen Marang of Spokane and Dorothy Robbins of Rich Hill, Mo.; a brother, Howard; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Hilda Buel

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Eugene for Hilda G. Buel of Eugene, who died Jan. 16 of age-related causes. She was 96.

She was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Alfred and Maude Tarleton Gillam. She married Lauren Buel on June 6, 1935, in Eugene. He died in 1989.

She graduated from Lincoln High School in Portland and held a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon. She was a journalist, historian and worked as a bookmobile librarian.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Stewart of Eugene and Paula Buel of Berkeley, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A son, Charles Buel, died in 1994.

Burial will be at San Mateo, Calif. Arrangements by Buell Funeral Chapel in Springfield. Remembrances to FOOD for Lane County.

Freda Gretchen Hansen

JUNCTION CITY — Freda Gretchen Hansen of Junction City died Jan. 7 of age-related causes. She was 99. No service is planned.

She was born Dec. 7, 1911, in Polk County, Iowa, to George and Essie Fees Huser. She married Peter Hansen on Jan. 1, 1935, in St. Croix Falls, Wis. They divorced in 1960.

She received her teaching certificate from Polk County, Wis., in 1932. She received a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University in 1969. Early in her career, she taught in one-room schools in rural Wisconsin. She retired from Harrisburg School District after teaching second and fourth grades for 17 years.

Survivors include four sons, Gary of Bellevue, Iowa, Dennis of Sheridan, Steven of Lebanon and Christman of Veneta; two daughters, Mary Jennings of Redmond and Joann Newman of Harrisburg; a sister, Pauline Larsen of Amery, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Inurnment will be at Lorain Union Cemetery at Indian Creek, Wis. Arrangements by Andreason’s Cremation & Burial Service in Springfield. Remembrances may be sent to the Eugene Mission.

Patricia Rae Griffin

DEXTER — Patricia Rae Griffin of Dexter died Dec. 27 of heart failure. She was 71. No service is planned.

She was born March 18, 1939, in Roseburg to George and Eileen Cooper. She married Jack Gilkison in 1957 in Sutherlin. They divorced in 1963. She married Darrell Griffin on Jan. 24, 1964, in Reno, Nev. They divorced in 1989.

She attended Sutherlin High School and was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Joni Griffin of Springfield; five sons, Jack, Darren and Kevin, all of Springfield, Joe of Central Point and Mike of Eugene; a brother, George Cooper of Dexter; a sister, Sandy Jenkins of Eugene; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

SPRINGFIELD — Jack G. Finger of Springfield died Jan. 7 of complications from cancer. He was 62. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 24, 1948, in Panorama City, Calif., to Jack and Margie Finger.

He graduated from high school in California and served in the Army in Vietnam. He was an artist, painter and sculptor and sold walking sticks at the Saturday Market.

Survivors include a son, Joshua of Eugene; two daughters, Rachel Finger and Sarah Finger, both of Springfield; and two sisters, Vicci Dunn of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Janet Livingston of Enterprise.

SPRINGFIELD — Pete Sergeant of Springfield died Jan. 3 of cancer at the age of 64. No service is planned.

He was born Sept. 24, 1946, in Stibnite, Idaho, to Raymond and Helen Rutledge Sergeant. He married Kolita Banks on Sept. 5, 1970, in McCall, Idaho.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was employed in the bridge department for Lane County Public Works.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sarah Hauck of Eugene and Jennifer Hubbard of Springfield; a brother, James Sergeant of McCall, Idaho; a sister, Sue Cathy of New Meadows, Idaho; and four grandchildren.

JUNCTION CITY — A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at The Raven in Junction City for Rose Mary “Dolly” Pomroy of Junction City, who died Jan. 1 of a stroke. She was 59.

She was born Sept. 20, 1951, in Amarillo, Texas. She married P. David “Down the Road Dave” Nowlin on Aug. 25, 2000, in Horton.

Survivors include her husband.
