Billie Jean “BJ” Gormley

SPRINGFIELD — A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 17, at Pioneer Cemetery in Myrtle Creek for Billie Jean “BJ” Gormley of Springfield, who died Dec. 13 of age-related causes. She was 77. A celebration of life is planned Jan. 7 at the Springfield Country Club.

She was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Sand Springs, Okla., to Edward and Ruth George Moss. She married Philip Gormley on Sept. 16, 1952, in Myrtle Creek.

She worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center for 22 years.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Scott of Stayton and Steven of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Ed Moss of Myrtle Creek; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

James Scott Armstrong of Eugene died May 12 of renal failure. He was 53. A private family service will be held later.

He was born Jan. 30, 1957, in Akron, Ohio, to Richard and Margaret Aderonich Armstrong.

He graduated from Kent High School in Ohio. He worked as a roofer.

Survivors include four sons, Zack and Nick, both of Boise, and Kevin and Adam, both of Eugene; a brother, Pat of Akron; three sisters, Kate Armstrong of Hollywood, Fla., and Sue Armstrong and Peggy Schneider, both of Akron; and one granddaughter.

How do we file a claim for Social Security burial allowance.

• The mortuary can notify the Social Security Administration of the death with Social Security form SSA-721

• The mortuary cannot file a claim for Social Security burial allowances

• Survivors can also contact the Social Security Administration directly

Claims are made by the survivors with the Social Security office closest to the home of the person filing the claim

How much is the death gratuity benefit and who will receive it?

The payment is $255 and is paid to:

• A spouse with whom the deceased was living, or

• A dependent minor child

Is there a difference between mortuaries?

• Some mortuaries will file a VA claim for reimbursement of mortuary and burial allowances on behalf of the family and mail it to the VA Regional Office

• It is the family’s responsibility to ask the mortuary if they filed the claim. If they have not, then the family may file the claim themselves
