John Seaber Deeming, 97, passed away June 24, 2026, at Pete Moore Hospice House in Eugene, OR.

He was born May 13, 1929 in Hinsdale, IL to William S Deeming and Catharine Buntin Deeming. He attended LaGrange area schools and graduated from Lyons Township High School in 1947.

He graduated from Carleton College in Minnesota in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics. He was then drafted into the Marines and after completing training in San Francisco and San Diego, he was assigned to Camp LeJeune with a duty post at Vieques Island, Puerto Rico. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant in August 1953.

He worked for Western Electric and its successor companies from 1953 to 1989. He said his claim to fame was that at one point he had the company record for being relocated the most times. As a quality control engineer, he worked and/or lived in many locations including Illinois, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, California, France and Japan, making many friends and having adventures along the way. He retired in 1989 and moved to Walnut Creek CA to be closer to his parents and brother.

John’s family helped him move to Eugene, OR after he had a stroke in 2015 and enjoyed having him close by. For the last four years, he lived at Willamette Oaks where he made many new friends, both residents and staff.

He enjoyed hiking, skiing, rock-climbing, mountain climbing, bicycling, spelunking, traveling, learning new things, telling stories, driving his Volkswagens and, over the years, playing with three generations of nieces/nephews, a “F’uncle” or “fun uncle” before the term was popularized.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William B. Deeming and sister-in-law, Barbara Miller Deeming. He is survived by three nieces, Cathy Deeming Lindsley (John), Mary Ann Deeming and Carol Deeming Vanlue (Chuck), all of Eugene; four grandnieces/nephews and their spouses and six great grandnieces/nephews in Eugene, Springfield, Portland and Beaverton.

He generously supported many worthy causes and organizations. Memorial contributions may be made to Food for Lane County or McKenzie River Trust or to Pete Moore Hospice House, where he spent his last days.

Interment will be at Lafayette Cemetery in Lafayette CA at a later date.
