With great sadness, we announce the passing of Lorna Torrey Palermo on July 23, 2026.

Lorna was a kind, determined, and adventurous spirit who dedicated her life to helping children and animals. After growing up in Washington and Oregon, she pursued a career in education. Her love of teaching took her to many places around the world, including Alaska, Japan, Iran, and Scotland. After many years in the classroom, she transitioned into mental health, serving as both a mental health counselor and a school counselor. She continued this meaningful work in Australia and later in Oregon for the remainder of her career.

In retirement, Lorna devoted herself to advocating for America's wild horses. She founded Advocates for Wild Equines (A*W*E), an organization dedicated to protecting and preserving wild mustangs and burros in Oregon and across the country. Her passion, determination, and tireless advocacy made a lasting difference for the animals she loved.

Above all, Lorna was a devoted mother, beloved sister, and cherished friend. She touched countless lives with her compassion, generosity, and adventurous heart, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A celebration of Lorna's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to one of the following organizations that support the protection of wild horses:

Love Wild Horses

Skydog Ranch and Sanctuary

Wild Horse Fire Brigad
