Michael
Egan
November 26, 1961 – April 10, 2026
On April 10, 2026, Michael Joseph Egan died of esophageal cancer at age 64. He faced his illness with quiet strength, resilience, and a deep care for those around him.
Michael followed in the footsteps of his beloved mother, Kathleen Laughlin Medearis, dedicating his life to caring for others as a nurse and caregiver. Through his work at Good Samaritan Hospital and PeaceHealth, he touched countless lives with compassion, humility, and an unwavering sense of service. In 2024, he was awarded the Daisy Award for his excellence in patient care. Various patients said of the care they received from him: “Michael is the example of what every nurse should strive to be”; “he was funny and kind and made me feel better”; “Michael is such a wonderful nurse, full of knowledge, expertise, and most importantly, a beautiful caring heart”.
Michael was surrounded by family and close friends throughout the final months of his life, a reflection of the deep relationships he built over the years. He is survived by his two older siblings, Brian Egan (Sherry Sawyer) and Molly Hutzler (Steve Hutzler), landing solidly in the middle of "The Egan 5”, with Kevin Egan (Paris Hancock), and Katie Egan (Damon Keeve) rounding out the squad. He was a devoted father to Shayla Archer (Brandon Shreeve). He was a proud uncle to Georgia, Conor, Nell, Nate, Beau, and Makaela. Michael also leaves behind many close friends and extended family including his Laughlin cousins, who loved him deeply and supported him throughout his life, particularly over the last several months. Michael is predeceased by his parents, Douglas Egan and Kathleen Laughlin Medearis, step-father Ken Medearis, uncle (and namesake) Mike Laughlin, his brother in-law Steve Hutzler, and his dear friend Tim Moran.
Outside of his professional life, Michael lived with generosity and heart. He regularly volunteered during the holidays at local food banks and shelters, and gave his time to Volunteers in Medicine, extending care to those in need. He was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors, and even in his final months, he could be found raking leaves across the street for a neighbor – small acts that defined the way he moved through the world.
Music was a constant companion and source of joy throughout his life. His guitar playing was always a welcome addition to family gatherings. In his final months, his playlist became a shared space for connection, with contributions from many who loved him.
Michael also found joy in life’s simple and spirited pleasures. He was an excellent skier, an avid golfer, and treasured his trips to Bandon Dunes, Baja, and Reno. He loved his time with friends, gatherings of which included regular “barn darts with old farts,” March Madness watch parties, and trips to the coast.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caregivers at Cascade Health, and a special acknowledgment to Kylie and Kate for their above and beyond kindness and support. The family asks in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Michael’s name to Cascade Health’s Hospice program.
Michael will be remembered for his generosity, humor, quiet acts of service, and the deep love he held for his family and community. His presence will be profoundly missed.
