Steven
Winston
Aug 9, 1951 — Sep 17, 2026
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Steven August Winston, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Steve was born August 9, 1951, in San Francisco, California, and died September 17, 2026 surrounded by family. His last hours were spent sharing stories of his life, giving encouragement and messages of love to his family.
He was a man of strength, humor, and generosity who lived life on his own terms from beginning to end.
Steve was the son of Bertha Silampa Winston and Michael Winston, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his beloved son Michael August Winston.
Steve’s career in reforestation and wildland firefighting contracting through his company Oregon LandWorks was followed by work in business development, mentorship, and community service. As a business person and community member, he led with integrity and wisdom.
A lover of the great outdoors, Steve enjoyed hiking, fishing, and camping; these pursuits he shared with his grandchildren on countless “epic” adventures to the high mountain lakes and coastal trails. He’d load up a van with picnic food and set the rules of the road. Before the youngest grandchild could walk, Steve carried him on his shoulders. As a young man, he convinced his children that he could “chew nails and spit tacks,” complete with theatrical enactment. Later in life he worked with his grandchildren, teaching lessons in yard work, financial management, woodworking, and driving. While his exterior may have been tough, his heart was tender. He watched countless dance recitals (he definitely confessed to sleeping through some of those), baseball, basketball, and football games, cheering on his grandchildren. Steve loved to read, mostly history and nonfiction but also enjoyed good fiction, and he shared that love of reading with his children, sending book recommendations often.
Steve is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon Winston, who was his partner in all endeavors. Together, they nurtured a loving family, including his daughters Miriam Winston Sisson, Maureen Winston, and Heather Hatcher, his son John Scurlock, his son-in-law Ryan Sisson and daughter-in-law Jennifer Scurlock. He also leaves behind siblings Leon Winston, Patricia Rhine, and Sandra Ryan, as well as nieces and nephews he dearly loved. Steven's legacy is carried on by his ten adored grandchildren: Madeleine, Sarah, Grace, Laura, Salvador, Kamron, Maiya, Cayden, Donovan, and Makayla, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Steve Winston's life was a testament to strength and tenderness, a rare blend that left an indelible mark on everyone he met. Though he is profoundly missed, his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
