Victor M Swanson 97 of Portland OR died at his assisted living location of age-related causes.
Vic was born July 23, 1928, in Menominee, MI. Vic graduated from Menominee High School in 1946. Vic attended Michigan Technology University and graduated with a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. Vic also received a commission as a Lieutenant in the Army Engineers.
After college Vic started working in the Engineering Department of the Marathon Mill in Menominee.
On June 2, 1951, he married Elaine St Denis in Marinette WI. Nine days later Vic reported to the army to serve his country during the Korean War. Following Korea, Vic served 7 years with the Wisconsin and Alabama National Guards before retiring as a Captain from the Army Reserves.
Vic worked as an Engineer for over 40 years in the Pulp and Paper industry in various positions at mills in Michigan, Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon. In 1968 the family moved to Oregon where he worked as the Manager of maintenance and engineering in the new Halsey Mill until he retired in 1991. Vic was an avid fisherman, hunter, stamp and coin collector, golfer, camper/traveler, and football fan, especially for the Green Bay Packers and the Oregon Ducks. Vic was a member of various camping clubs, a past Knights of Columbus Grand Knight, lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion and Korean War Veterans Association. In retirement he was active in supporting various veteran organizations and volunteered at the Veteran Memorial building in Eugene. Vic and Elaine were active RVers year-round, spending winters in the southwest United States. Vic tried to live the motto God, Country and Family.
Vic was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Richard. Survivors include his wife of 74 yrs Elaine, a son Gary (Judy) Swanson, and daughters Susan Swanson and Lori (Sam) Hays and five Grandchildren; Rebecca, Eric, Alexander, Nathan and Jacob.
A celebration of life service will be planned for a later date. Donations in Vic’s name would be welcomed at the Korean War Veterans Association in Wilsonville, Oregon or at any other military organization of your choice.
